Description
A root cellar in the abandoned Rutland State Prison, Rutland, Massachusetts. The prison opened in 1904, and housed low level inmates, mostly drunkards, until it was closed in 1930, as it was located in the Ware River Watershed. Operating as a prison farm, they grew potatoes and raised hens, goats and cows, supplying food for the other prisons located within Massachusetts.
